Genmaicha combines Japanese green tea with rice for a cup that brings fresh green character and a warm, toasted aroma together. It is gently savoury rather than sugary, with a cereal-and-popcorn-like note that comes from the rice character—not from added popcorn or butter.

Toasty • Green • Gently savoury

Ingredients

Japanese green tea, rice.

The current record does not name the tea grade, cultivar, harvest, rice variety, blend proportion or precise rice process. We therefore do not promise a particular sencha or bancha base, brown rice, popped rice or a fixed tea-to-rice ratio.

How to brew it

  • Amount: 1 teaspoon (about 2.5g) per 250ml
  • Water: 80°C
  • Time: 2 minutes

Strain completely and drink it without milk first. If the cup is thin, add a little more blend next time before increasing the time. If it is rough or grassy, check that the water was not too hot and the leaf did not sit in the pot.

Caffeine and pack choice

It contains natural caffeine because it contains green tea. No measured caffeine result or tea-to-rice proportion is supplied for this blend, so we do not give a numerical or low/medium caffeine promise.

Choose from 50g, 100g, 250g, 500g and 1kg packs. At 2.5g per cup, 50g is roughly 20 servings before personal adjustments.

Read the Genmaicha café and brewing guide, or compare it with Sencha and Hojicha. Store sealed, cool and dry, away from heat, sunlight and strong aromas.
